There is a whole new section on New Jersey which although not complete, should give you some good fall opportunities.

I’ve been trying to piece together a guide for North Carolina as this leads the searches on this site, hope to be able to get down there this fall.

There is a Hike-A-Thon scheduled :

An Even Greener GoLite http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/2009/09/an-even-greener-golite/ http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/2009/09/an-even-greener-golite/#comments Wed, 16 Sep 2009 15:17:14 +0000 admin http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/?p=1829 GoLite®, leader in lightweight and ultralight gear, has announced more than 50% of its Spring 2010 collection will be green.  Last year its products were 20% environmentally friendly, by 2015 the goal is 100%.

Founded in 1998, with its market responsive product line, geared to the lightweight and ultralight market they again are pioneering a trend.  Not satisfied with a product here or there, or simply a single line being green; all the 2010 main pack fabrics and all its sleeping bag collections will be made with Tier 1 recycled nylons and polyesters.

They have embraced the challenge. The figures have increased dramatically since 2008:

  • 2008      3% products made from EPMs
  • 2009    20% products from EPMs
  • 2010    50% products made from EPMs

The goal is to use 100% EPMs (environmentally preferred materials), materials that are recycled, recyclable, organic, certified, and/or renewable by 2015.

But then what else would you expect from a company that started out as an innovator?  Their response to the needs of climbers, baby boomers, women and the young has led them to expand into 23 countries in eleven short years.  It’s not just about lightening your load; it’s the freedom and enjoyment of your sport with the equipment assisting you, not dominating you.

GoLite products are worthy of your consideration.  This is an unpaid, unsolicited article.  You may or may not find GoLite in any of the banners advertised on this site.  The link I gave you is for GoLite themselves, but except for closeouts they will refer you to a retailer near you.  My only desire is for you to have this information before you when making a buying decision.

Backpacking with children: Personal safety pack http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/2009/09/backpacking-with-children-personal-safety-pack/ http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/2009/09/backpacking-with-children-personal-safety-pack/#comments Mon, 07 Sep 2009 08:53:14 +0000 admin http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/?p=1812 Personal safety packs must be worn by every child.  Every child, when must wear a fanny pack containing:

  • Loud emergency whistle
  • Light sticks or flashlight with spare batteries
  • Space blanket (about  the size of a cigarette pack), aside from offering some weather protection it is highly visible
  • Water, at least a four ounce bottle
  • Laminated instructions,  (for prereaders use pictures) with “if you are lost instructions”
    1. Do not move from where you are, unless you are in danger
    2. Use whistle.  Realize you may have moved too far for your group for them to immediately hear you. Toot your whistle every 10-15 minutes.
    3. Do not panic.  As searchers expand their search, you will be found.
    4. Sleep before you are tired. You do not want to be so tired you do not hear searchers.  Use space blanket.
    5. A picture of the family

Go over instructions before you leave home and remind child of the rules once on the trail, with them giving you the answers.

Lipsmackin’ Vegetarian Backpackin’

Many of you have expressed interest in this a good percentage of the traffic to this site comes from the backpacking

recipe search. Since I have cooking too many years, I don’t have a collection of printed recipes, I just open my cupboard and see whats there and make my recipes on the fly.  Then before actually printing a recipe, I have to taste test, field test, test availability of ingredients, eliminate chemical soups where I can, sometimes scrapping it and starting all over.  It has been very slow going process, so when I found this book an “AHA”,  went off in my feeble brain.

It’s getting excellent reviews, I’ve ordered my copy.  From what I’ve read the recipes can be easily converted for the Vegans among us.  The same authors have authored another backpacking recipes book for non vegetarians.

I know all the jokes about New Jersey and if you live on the East Coast, you probably do also.  But one thing you may not know about is the treasures that abound.  New Jersey’s second largest industry is tourism and it is not all about the casinos.  Located at Seaside Park, across the bay from Barnegat Lighthouse.

Fees: Weekdays Memorial Day through Labor Day : per vehicle $6.00

Fees: Weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day : per vehicle $10.00

Go early, once at capacity gates shut.

What many people don’t know:

  • Open year round, $5.00 per car after Labor Day

  • Excellent surf fishing
  • Migratory route for waterfowl. Best times October and May
  • Scuba diving permitted upon registration
  • Drive your four wheel onto the beach to fish, no camping out, but fishing permitted Midnight to 4am
  • Cycling is along the main access road, however there are eight trails approximately one mile long apiece, to explore
  • 10 miles of beach to explore

  • Swimming only in summer along lifeguard protected areas, I believe, about a one mile strip.
  • That leaves you, the hiker, nine miles of beach to walk.
  • Dogs permitted, leashed, except in swimming areas.
  • Take a canoe or kayak trip out to the Sedge Islands during the summer
  • Facilities for the disabled include specially designed wheel chairs, to get you out to the water to swim or fish, plus a dock to fish from

You may even see a red fox or two, my granddaughter and I did.  There is a little bit of something for everyone.  I enjoy going in the fall, most of all, to beach comb after a storm.  Maybe I will see you there.

Island Beach State Park just one of New Jersey’s treasures.

Vegan/Vegetarian Hiking Shoes and Boots http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/2009/07/vegan-hiking-shoes-and-boots/ http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/2009/07/vegan-hiking-shoes-and-boots/#comments Thu, 16 Jul 2009 07:15:28 +0000 admin http://www.eastcoastbackpacking.com/?p=1633 Finding Vegan Ultralight or Lightweight hiking boots or shoes, never seemed to be this difficult before.  The only good thing about it is when you find vegan, you have your lightweight or ultralight solved.  As as long as you are packing all light equipment, the sturdiness of the shoes should be adequate for all but the most arduous trails.

Time to replace those hiking boots / shoes? I hope not, especially if you are Vegan.  Seems everyone, including Zappo’s ® is sold out or almost.

Altrec.com Outdoors carries Garmot® Kiowa and Nagevi  hiking shoes, both men’s and women’s.  Both styles vegan.

The Kiowa shoe weighs in at 27 ounces and listed as being for light hiking. Very limited supply.

The Nagevi shoe weighs 20 ounces, also listed for light hiking. Full supply of men’s, most women’s sizes, as of this moment.  Described as waterproof but has mesh panels.
