]]>Anyway, I was twittering and found this stove, with instructions to make your own, Penny Ultralight Alcohol Backpacking Stove. I’m not very handy so will have to wait to persuade someone to make me one. Also since I am taking soooooooooo long to get the recipe section going check out his favorite recipe section, it may fill some needs. Instructions are free, all he asks is you send a donation to Sierra Club if you are so inclined. My recipe section can now be found under the drop down recipe/menu tab. I still may move it to another domain, but not yet.

See features below. I’ve gone to gear shops and had them put this up for me , then put it up myself. So quick and easy. The very best ultralight tent I could find anywhere and I have searched for two months. Pictures and specs are for the two person tent, also available as 1 or 3 person.

Lightest backpacking tents yet! Copper Spur UL tents truly redefine lightweight with their interior space to weight ratio. New fabric is lighter than anything used before but a high thread count and double twisted thread offers strength and durability. Copper Spur tents feature DAC Featherlite NSL poles – featuring eco-friendly anodizing. DAC poles are superlight and strong with press fit connectors, and lightweight hubs.

The SteriPEN ® by Hydro-Photon delivers clean germ free water in seconds with no chemical taste. It eliminates the need to carry extra fuel for boiling. It is sort of a no brainer; your choices are boiling, filtration, chemicals or Ultraviolet .
Boiling takes time, you aren’t going to stop in the middle of the day so you must carry all your water, plus extra fuel with you.
Chemicals make the water taste awful, you can mask it or bring a carbon filter to remove the taste… after you have waited 30 minutes for the iodine or chlorine to work.
Filtration does not remove viruses, so you have to chemically treat the water anyway.
The SteriPEN® takes less than a minute to treat 16 ounces. Worse case scenario you might want to use a coffee filter or handkerchief, to filter out large particles if the water is not clear. Great for the lightweight or ultralight backpacker.

Heat: One of the safest methods. Collect your water carefully, you do not want to end up with hot mud. Heat to boiling should be sufficient, however to be safer you can continue to boil a minute or two longer. The problem with this method is of course the time, fuel and weight. Time to boil: typically you will not stop during the day to do this. This leaves you carrying a days worth of water and extra fuel on your back. Excellent as a back up method, you should never leave your water needs dependent on one method, but as a primary method not a good choice.
Filtration: Removes bacteria and protozoa, it does nothing for viruses. In North America, viral contamination of the water is less a problem but it does exist. Do you want to take the chance? If you want the added protection you will have to use iodine or chlorine. Can be time intensive.
Chemical: Primarily iodine or chlorine. Iodine should not be used by anyone on lithium, allergic to iodine or shellfish. The medicinal taste can be masked by vitamin C or a sports drink mix. Chlorine, safer than iodine, you would not want to wait until you are in the backcountry to find out you are allergic to iodine. Also alters the taste of water, would you enjoy drinking swimming pool water? Both the above chemicals have a 30 minute wait time, before water is safe to drink. You can also run it through a carbon filter to remove the taste, but here again…time.
UV Technology: In seconds, it kills bacteria, protozoa and viruses. No need to lug a days worth of water. No need to bring extra fuel. lighter than filtration systems. No need to drink poisonous chemicals with your water. No need to hope filtration is enough. This same technology is used in water treatment plants. Please note: you will have to filter cloudy water of the particulate, but a coffee filter has always worked for me, even on two week trips. The reason for this is that ultraviolet rays do not penetrate particles. Usable, safe water in seconds.
]]>Camel Bak Backpack sale
An industry leader in hydration packs, Camel Bak has the technology you want. Sierra Trading Post has a prices right now that I have not been able to find anywhere else.
While not overly fond of the technology for backpackers (I try to carry the least possible), it is a must for serious cyclers. Fumbling for a bottle and attempting to unscrew it, or latching onto a moving straw can be outright dangerous. Neither can you tip your head back (taking your eyes off what is ahead) in an attempt to drink from a sports bottle. What is left? The perfect answer? A hydration pack, and Camelbak is a leader in the technology.
Cyclers your water requirement probably exceeds those of hikers as you tend to mouth breathe, losing more fluids with each breath. Also you can be less aware of the amount you are sweating as the air flow dries you faster.
And did I ever stumble into a honey of a sale! Actually, I was looking at dog backpacks when this jumped out. Enjoy, a real sale on Camelbaks, and if you are a backpacker who likes hydration systems this is also for you.
